Wu Huoliang, born in 1966 in Leping, Jiangxi Province, is a Senior Arts and Crafts Artist, a member of the Chinese Arts and Crafts Society, a member of the Jingdezhen Artists Association, a member of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Association, a senior artist of the Jingdezhen Calligraphy and Painting Academy.

He began to engage in arts and crafts works in 1985. He learned lacquer painting in his early years. In 1987, he went to Jingdezhen Art Ceramic Factory to study ceramic art creation, and studied under Mr. Xu Wenqiang, a Senior Artist. In the early 1990s, he was invited by clients in Shanghai to go to Shanghai to work on portrait painting on ceramics. He successively painted portraits on ceramic plaques for a large number of famous persons such as Wan Laiming, Sun Dayu, Xu Xinghu and Ruan Lingyu, and was much appreciated. After returning to Jingdezhen, he continued to engage in the creation of figures and portraits on ceramic plaques. During this period, at the invitation of the Babaoshan Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery in Beijing, he painted over 1,000 ceramic portraits of deceased state leaders and cultural celebrities, such as Marshal Nie Rongzhen and his wife, General Xu Haidong and his wife, Vice Premier Deng Zihui and his wife, Ba Jin and his wife, Xiao Shan and Hou Baolin and his wife. He has also painted portraits on ceramic plaques for famous actors Wang Runsheng and Gao Xiumin, and received high praise. In 2004, during the Millennium Celebration of Jingdezhen, entrusted by the Jingdezhen Municipal People’s Government, he painted more than ten portraits on ceramic plaques for Chinese and foreign guests from the United States, Japan, South Korea, Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and so on, and these were presented to the foreign guests as government gifts and were highly praised by the Municipal Party Committee, the Municipal Government leaders and the foreign guests.

In the more than 20 years of ceramic arts and crafts creation, especially in the process of painting portraits on ceramic plaques, he has been guided and assisted by Zeng Kaixue, Zhang Wenchao, Zhang Jian and other masters of portraits on ceramics. He actively explores and absorbs the characteristics and essence of the super realism and bright color of western oil paintings, and strives to achieve excellence. His works are liked and respected by collectors and ceramic portrait lovers in China and abroad.

Making famille rose ceramic plaque painting is more difficult than traditional paper painting, because it has to be fired twice in the kiln and there are risks of cracking or deforming. However, the colour enamels used in ceramic plaque painting are more stable and the texture is stronger. Ceramic plaque painting has more layering and three-dimensional sense than paper painting. Moreover, it can be permanently preserved, avoiding insect bites and weathering.

Qiaojie is a character in “Dream of the Red Mansions”, one of the Twelve Women of Jinling, the daughter of Wang Xifeng and Jia Lian. Mr. Wu Huoliang painted this painting with superb famille rose realistic portrait skills. The purity and beauty of Qiaojie, one of the Twelve Women of Jinling was depicted.
